About this place
New York's and Greenwich Village's oldest Gay bar. Started in 1864, it became popular among homosexuals in the 1919s, a renowned headquarters for the LGBTQ+ community. The Mattachine Society organized a 'sip' in 1966. Inspired by the civil rights movement, it was a protest against the State Liquor Authority's policy of de-licensing bars serving LGBTQ+ people. It was one of the events that led to gay liberation. This place invites to experience a taste of New York's gay history and the best-kept secret at this historic bar is their juicy burgers.
